HOME OF THE
1000LB BLACK MARLIN
Cairns has hands down the best black marlin grounds in the world. In 1966 the first 1000lb black marlin was caught off the coast of cairns, putting cairns on the map. To this day Cairns catches more 1000lb black marlin in 100 days, than the rest of the world catches in one year.
Every year from September
through to December, these giants migrate up to the reefs from lizard island to cairns before continuing on.
Catching a 1000 pound marlin is a bucket list fish for many anglers.
Cairns uses very unique techniques chasing these giants and the experience is one many fishermen's dreams
80% is done by trolling dead baits, such as rigged swimming and skipping baits and the rest with marlin lures attached to 130 pound tackle.
The big girls consistently feed in the afternoons, so mornings are spent catching fresh bait such as scad mackerel, tuna, shark mackerel and rainbow runners, which is great fishing in itself!
After spending the day catching giant marlin, enjoy a cheese platter while you watch the sunset over the Great Barrier Reef.

Our Vessel
KIAMA is a 45ft Pleysier custom game boat which has gone under a full make over in 2021. She's been fitted with all the latest electronic packages, including twin - brand new Volvo D11 engines. KIAMA has all the creature comforts to support your adventure with us, including fully air conditioned saloon and suits. Having a 7.5 Onan generator means you will have the ease of 240v power outlets, giving you the ability to charge all your electronics. We have an onboard desalination plant which gives us with an endless supply of pristine fresh water.
Being fitted with a custom built black marlin tuna tower and other bill fishing must-haves, Kiama is a sportfishing beast!
MEET THE SKIPPER
CAPT. JASON LEGG
Jason Legg has been involved in the charter industry and guiding from a very young age. He and his dad ran Sport fishing charters along the south East Coast of NSW. From the age of 13 Jason started working as crew aboard his fathers boat and obtained his first commercial skippers ticket
while still in high school.
Jason's dream was to come to Cairns and do a heavy tackle season which he did at the age of 18 and from there he never looked back. He has worked as a fishing guide, crewman and now skipper in Cairns ever since. Jason has crewed for some well respected captains such as Dan McCarthy and Chris 'Sharky' Miles doing both light and heavy tackle seasons. He then went on to became head guide for Nomad Sportfishing, before starting his own business.
Jason started Topwater Sportfishing charters in 2018 with the goal of providing the best of both worlds - topwater popping and jigging charters as well as chasing giant black marlin.
He's always been very passionate about fishing as an angler, but he gets the same, if not more enjoyment now watching a once in a lifetime fish being caught by his guests.
BACK IN THE DAY
There is no doubt that the Cairns black marlin fishery is world class. Founded in the 50’s, Cairns confirmed its first Grander black marlin in 1966. This fish of a lifetime weighed an astounding 1064lbs and was caught by Richard Obach on board the Sea Baby, skippered by George Bransford.
Since that day Cairns has led the world in large black marlin captures. At present (some 60 years later), Cairns produces more black marlin over 1000lbs in our short 3 month season then the rest of the world does in a whole year.
